Living The Simple Life in Our Swedish Cabin
Living The Simple Life in Our Swedish Cabin
After spending 3 weeks trying to buy property in Sweden as a foreigner, we decided to experience what life would be like if we lived in a rural cabin. In this Sweden travel vlog, we rent our dream lakefront cabin and try out the Swedish way of life in the countryside.

⭐ About Travel Beans:
Hello and welcome to our channel! We are Alex & Emma, a British couple who have been exploring the world together for over 10 years - from backpacking to vanlife:
2012/13: We both embarked on our own solo backpacking trips through Southeast Asia, where we would eventually meet at a hostel in the mountains of Thailand and begin traveling together. After a year and a half of backpacking around Southeast Asia & Australia, we returned home and to the corporate world!
2015: Travel Beans was born and we filmed our first videos on a road trip around Europe with friends! This was our biggest trip yet.. and you can go back and watch the entire adventure because we filmed ALL of it! This trip took us through Russia, Mongolia & China, on the longest railway journey in the world. Followed by highlights such as staying on a local island in the Maldives for a month, going on safari in Sri Lanka, couchsurfing & hitchhiking in Korea, seeing the snow monkeys in Japan, island hopping in the Philippines, trekking 60km through the centre of Myanmar, exploring the Indian Himalayas, and checking out some of the incredible US National Parks.
2016: Despite an unbelievably memorable year and a half of travels, which we were incredibly grateful to have had the privilege to experience.. we found ourselves in New York City, battling depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on.
2017: After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle. We left the UK with just £500 in our bank account and a dream to make a continuous travel lifestyle happen! We both got online English teaching jobs to be able to fund our travels and to keep creating videos. We can't quite believe that our younger selves decided to take this plunge but we are so grateful they did as we are still on this journey today!
What now?
Over the years, we've discovered that we LOVE road trips and even decided to renovate our very own little VWT4 van into a campervan to be able to enjoy vanlife and spend more time on the road. We are now the proud owners of 2 awesome little campers - one based in the UK and one that we keep in the USA. You'll often find us using one of these vans to explore Europe and North America. If you enjoy this kind of content we'd recommend checking out our Italy Road Trip series, USA vanlife series and our Japan in a Tiny Van series as well as our UK vanlife content.
Our time spent overcoming depression has influenced our outlook on life dramatically! We are now traveling the world in search of what makes us happy. We love sharing the highs and lows of our trips through our videos and hope to spread a little positivity and light to all of the beautiful people who take the time to tune in and watch each week!

As much as I admire your travel experiences, I would caution you against buying such a place without an extended feel of the environment. Will you be able to make friends? Will you cope with the loneliness of such a cut off place? What about the mosquitos, which are a serious problem in that location? Why not rent somewhere first to see if you can sustain your interest in such a place? What about Portugal? Have you given that idea up? Or perhaps you can afford both.

There's always next time. Don't get into the bidding wars, that's how you lose moneys that you might need to fix up what needs to be fixed up at the house. And yes there are so many of these places, so think with your wallet first, then with your heart 😛

When I went to test drive the van I bought, I took my friend a mechanic along with me on the test drive I bought it from a private owner, paid cash and got a really good deal. A few people have approached me that are interested in buying my van and have offered me more money than I paid for it. I got a great offer on my last vehicle, so I sold it for more than it was worth because I would have been stupid not to.

I live in northern Sweden and honestly it's not that bad during the winter, like yeah it's cold and you have to shovel snow but some people in these comments make it seem like its impossible when it really isn't. Honestly the windy rain/snow mixed winters in the UK are more annoying cause you get wet and cold, in Sweden you basically only get cold if you're not wearing enough clothes. "There's no bad weather, only bad clothes" is a common saying in Sweden and it's true :P

Just a thought about the bidding. Even if you don't legally is bound, don't bid if you not are really interested, and if you win you should honour your bid. It creates really big problems for them who's selling the property.

Hi , love yoyr videos , we live in Stockholm and have a country house where we are in the summers but rent out in the winter , many people want to rent a cabin or a place to experience the winter and go skiing , scooter tours or just relax . I shed a tear during your bidding on the house when you fanally had to give up. Promise that you will continue looking for a house because you have to move here to us in Sweden , my name is Gunnar. HERE IS THE ENTIRE MESSAGE TRANSLATED INTO SWIDISH.

most people won't be able to stand the 6 to 8 month long winters. they are bad enough in Stockholm let alone any further north of stockholm. and its getting colder and longer winters every year now. not just the coldness... the darkness too. Both same time.... it takes a lot to get used to.

I live in Norway and know of people who bought houses in the middle of nowhere in Sweden... they're fine if you can live there most of the cold parts of the year.... but the big issue is fungus from the cold and damp weather... it can totally take over the whole house.. I recall one of my friends went back to her house at xmas and she literally stepped through the floor... yet we'd only been there in the summer.. the fungus was everywhere... the whole house, in the piano, everywhere... to fix it was a lot more than the €20,000 outlay and she just had to get rid of it... heartbreaking as we had a beautiful lake nearby that nobody was using..

I lived for 5 years, as a UK expat, in a pretty chalet style house in Latvia. The winters were very cold and snowy, but much more bearable than the hot summers due to the utter misery the mosquitoes brought and the horrible nocturnal heat that robbed me of sleep. The biggest downers were missing my native culture and language, missing my family and friends (I have never felt so isolated, despite being with my wife and kids), and the sense of danger due to the Russian build-up for its invasion of Ukraine. I would say that since we are now moving into a time of increasing geopolitical tensions, you do not be rash in making idealisations about moving abroad.

hello ! I am a camperman, the person who posted the comments that you show in your video about the robberies, our side window was opened, two of the window locks were opened with something thin that they put between the window and the plastic and the third lock was broken, thank God I had seen the comments from park4night and we went to Monte Igueldo but I did not leave calmly so we went up to Monte Igueldo and in a matter of 30 minutes we returned to the van to take a look at it, that was the moment that I found the window forced, they did not have time to get in because we arrived just in time, I saw that they were hiding behind the van then they saw me arriving and began to move away from the van, I went behind them and just then a police patrol passed by, I stopped them and we ran and managed to catch them, they were two Moroccans and the police told us that they were old acquaintances, they arrested them and I went to file a complaint, The damage they caused was minimal, just a lock that cost me €4, but I filed a complaint in case it helps and they end up in jail one day! It's a shame that they stole a lot of things from you! We left San Sebastian that same day, they really have a huge security problem there and we, at least in a van, won't be going back there for a long time, keep up the good work!
